Photographic tips

It is always a great pleasure to return home with clear and dramatic photographs of the rock carvings to treasure and to share with others.

Here are a few tips that have helped our photography:

  • It is best to photograph the rock carvings in sunlight. Remember to turn off your automatic flash
  • If you can, try and take your photographs when the sun is low in the sky and there is angled light
  • To maximise the shadows in the cups and grooves, and thereby ‘draw out’ the carvings, photograph the carvings facing into the sun
  • If you can, photograph the carvings at different times of the year and in different weather conditions
  • Use a scale as it helps you to remember the size of the rock carvings
  • Keep accurate records of your photographs as you can quickly forget which photographs belong to which panel
